High School Education in the United States
High School Placements in the United States
High school education in the United States, just like in Turkey, lasts for 4 years and is completed in the 12th grade. Almost every state has numerous private and boarding schools, as well as public high schools with high educational standards. Students graduating from these high schools have the opportunity to pursue university education in many countries around the world.
While receiving high school education in the United States, students, like in Turkey, can choose their fields of study (such as engineering, economics, administrative sciences, social sciences, natural sciences, literature, etc.) based on the subject areas they are interested in. U.S. high school education is designed to allow students to continue their academic or vocational training comfortably. Students who wish to continue their education after high school select their high school courses according to the university programs they want to attend and the admission requirements set by the university administrations. For example, a student who wishes to study mechanical engineering at the university level must have taken physics, chemistry, and mathematics courses in high school. The counseling offices in high schools provide students with guidance services in areas such as course selection and career counseling.
In addition to its high standards and international recognition, the U.S. education system offers the following advantages:
- You will have the opportunity to improve your English to the highest level.
- You can easily continue your university education either in the U.S. or in another country.
- You will make friends from various regions and cultures around the world.
- The tuition fees are comparable to private schools in Turkey.
You can start high school education in the U.S. at any year or semester from the 8th grade onwards. Whether it’s the 8th, 9th, 11th, or 12th grade, you can transfer to a school in the U.S.
If you wish, you can study for one semester or one academic year and then return to Turkey, or you can complete the 12th grade in the U.S. and receive your high school diploma.
All high schools in the U.S. are recognized by Turkey’s Ministry of National Education (MEB). Therefore, with the diploma you receive, you can obtain equivalency in Turkey.
Here are the high school options we offer placement services for in the United States:
Private Schools (Day Schools): Just like private schools in Turkey, there are private schools in the U.S. These schools offer highly standardized, student-focused education programs with small class sizes and provide opportunities to attend top universities after graduation. All private schools are accredited. Applications open early and close early. Accommodation is provided with American families. We have schools in all states of the U.S. The cost of education and accommodation ranges from $13,000 to $42,000 annually, depending on the city. There are educational options to fit almost any budget.
Public High Schools: The only difference from private schools is that in public high schools, you have the opportunity to study for only one year. The cost of education and accommodation ranges from $13,000 to $21,000. Accommodation is provided with American families. For example, if you attend a public high school in the 8th grade, after completing the 8th grade, you can transfer to private or boarding schools. If you attend the 12th grade, you will receive your diploma and continue your higher education.
Boarding Schools: Boarding schools are also private schools. The reason for different accommodations is that these schools are located on large campuses and are usually far from city centers. Just like in private schools, you can study for as long as you wish. In U.S. high school applications, students are required to take the SLEP test. The SLEP test is an American exam that measures English proficiency. The required passing score for the SLEP test is 45. Students with intermediate and advanced levels of English can easily score 45. The tests are conducted in our offices.

Commynity College
Community Colleges in the U.S.
Community Colleges are two-year institutions with a rich history of providing extensive educational opportunities. They form a crucial part of the American higher education system. Today, over 10 million students, which is about 40% of all university students, attend Community Colleges in the U.S. With over 1,100 Community Colleges in operation for nearly a century, they are often referred to as the “gateway to opportunities,” with the goal of offering quality and equal educational access to anyone who desires it.
Community Colleges provide an excellent start in education. Students can earn a two-year degree and enter the workforce, transfer to a four-year institution, or take courses to update their skills for career advancement.
Many Community Colleges have academic agreements with four-year colleges/universities within their states. This means that courses taken at Community Colleges can be easily transferred. Many American and international students choose to complete the first two years of their university education at a Community College because of the lower tuition costs.
Community Colleges are also referred to as “neighbor colleges” and are funded through city and state taxes. This makes them very affordable for Americans. Since international students do not pay taxes, they pay higher fees than local students, but these fees are still significantly lower than those at four-year universities.
Today, more than half of the students at four-year colleges/universities in the U.S. have taken courses at a Community College. Besides classes, Community Colleges offer sports programs, cultural events, student clubs, and activities for both American and international students, helping students make new friends and quickly learn about American culture and language.
Community Colleges are divided into private or public schools. While you can find Community Colleges all over the U.S., only about 80% accept international students. It is important to thoroughly research the schools when choosing one, ensuring they are located in safe areas and meet American higher education standards.
Community Colleges, focused on serving their local communities, are not as widely known abroad. However, the number of Community Colleges promoting themselves and attracting international students, similar to universities, is steadily increasing.
Before selecting a Community College, it is crucial to understand the differences and similarities between Community Colleges and four-year schools.
Community Colleges also vary among themselves. Some are large institutions with multiple campuses in urban areas, while others serve smaller student populations in rural areas. Despite these differences, all Community Colleges share a common mission of providing accessible, high-quality education and maintaining high academic standards.
Advantages
Many Community Colleges have a global focus, preparing students for the 21st century with an awareness of the importance of international perspectives. Technology extends education beyond the classroom, allowing for a worldwide scope of learning.
Here are some reasons why international students choose Community Colleges:
a) Transfer to a Four-Year College/University Many students start their higher education at a Community College and eventually graduate from a four-year institution. Community Colleges and four-year institutions collaborate to facilitate this transfer process. Agreements that outline the required courses and programs for transfer are becoming more common, and counselors are available to support students in this process.
b) Significant Savings on Tuition One of the major benefits of attending a Community College is the lower cost. While international students pay higher tuition fees than U.S. residents, the cost is still much lower compared to public and private four-year institutions.
c) Wide Range of Academic Programs Community Colleges offer a wide variety of educational opportunities. With many programs to choose from, students have a great chance to select the best path for their career. Many international students opt for programs in Business Administration, Computer Science, Engineering, and Health. Community Colleges offer associate degrees in areas such as Arts, Sciences, Mathematics, Foreign Languages, General Studies, and Music.
Programs and majors differ from school to school, so students should carefully review the school’s catalog when making decisions. Students have the flexibility to change their major during their education, which is not always possible in universities in other countries.
d) Cutting-Edge Technology Community Colleges and technology play critical roles in each other’s growth. These schools use advanced technology in teaching and assessment. There are numerous computer labs equipped with state-of-the-art materials and software. Advanced fields such as Telecommunications, Digital Systems, Robotics, and Laser Optics are available at some Community Colleges.
e) Qualified and Accessible Faculty The primary responsibility of a Community College educator is teaching, not research. Many professors have professional experience in the fields they teach. Faculty members are easily accessible to students during office hours and often serve as mentors or references for student clubs and organizations.
f) Smaller Class Sizes The average class size at Community Colleges is significantly smaller than at four-year institutions. This creates a more personal atmosphere that helps international students adjust more easily to academic life in the U.S.
g) Diversity Community Colleges serve students of different ages, backgrounds, and cultures. They offer a wide variety of clubs and activities that allow students to meet new people and gain diverse perspectives.
h) Support for International Students Community Colleges are committed to helping their students succeed. They offer a wide range of support services, from tutoring and counseling to career planning and extra courses. Many schools also offer cross-cultural programs and assistance with immigration-related issues. Most Community Colleges have an “International Center” or “International Programs” office that provides full-time expert counseling services for international students.
i) Proven Success Many prominent individuals in the fields of government, entertainment, business, and science started their higher education at a Community College. The education and experiences they received at these institutions prepared them for the ever-changing world and laid the foundation for their future contributions.
Differences
Easier Admission: Community Colleges have lower TOEFL score requirements than regular universities, and some may not require TOEFL at all, opting for their own placement tests instead. Additionally, fewer documents are needed for admission compared to four-year institutions.
Lower Annual Tuition Fees: Community College tuition is generally 20% to 80% cheaper than that of four-year schools, making them an affordable option.
Smaller Student-Teacher Ratios: With class sizes ranging from 15 to 30 students, Community Colleges allow for better teacher-student relationships.
Limited On-Campus Housing: Only about 33% of Community Colleges have on-campus housing.
University Education
Undergraduate Education in the U.S.
There are two simple ways to pursue undergraduate education in the U.S. You can either apply directly to a four-year university or enroll in a two-year community college and then transfer to a university for the third and fourth years to complete your degree. In either case, you will ultimately receive a bachelor’s degree from a four-year university. Community colleges are the most popular starting point for higher education in the U.S. for three main reasons.
First, getting accepted into community colleges is much easier and less demanding than four-year universities. Often, you don’t need a high TOEFL score or to take the SAT exam to be admitted. Second, community colleges are significantly more affordable than four-year universities, allowing you to save a considerable amount of money by completing your first two years there. Third, students who graduate from two-year community colleges can be directly admitted to most four-year universities in the U.S. and continue their education seamlessly, earning the degree from the university they finish at, giving them two diplomas.
If you prefer to apply directly to a four-year university, you will need to take two exams: TOEFL and SAT. The scores you receive, along with your high school GPA, are crucial for admission. If your English skills are not sufficient to pass these exams, you may need to enroll in a university preparation program to address these deficiencies. At this stage, 444edu.com offers excellent support in collaboration with two of the top organizations in the U.S.
Master’s and Graduate Education in the U.S.
To be accepted into these programs, students must have completed an undergraduate degree. Master’s degrees, such as M.A. (Master of Arts), M.S. (Master of Science), and M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration), are typically awarded after two years of study. Some programs can be completed in a year or a year and a half. Certain master’s degrees highlight the specific field of study, such as:
- Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.)
- Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.)
- Master of Arts in Education (M.A.Ed.)
The most important factor in being admitted to a master’s program is the student’s academic performance during their undergraduate studies. Many American universities require a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale, or around 7.5 on a 10-point scale, for admission. However, other factors such as English proficiency, general aptitude, professional test scores, and reference letters also play a role in acceptance.
To pursue a master’s degree in the U.S., many universities require students to take the TOEFL along with the GRE or GMAT exams. The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is required for students who want to pursue an MBA in the U.S. The exam tests your quantitative, verbal, and analytical problem-solving abilities, as well as your reading comprehension in English. The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is required for students aiming to pursue a master’s in engineering and the sciences.
You can take these exams in Turkey or, if you prefer, receive preparatory education in the U.S. and take the exams there, followed by placement in master’s programs.
Cost of University Education in the U.S.
With over 3,000 universities in the U.S., tuition fees vary greatly. However, to provide a general idea, the annual cost of attending a standard university can range from $10,000 to $15,000. At community colleges, this figure is between $5,000 and $9,000. Additionally, the average cost for housing and living expenses in the U.S. is around $10,000 to $15,000 per year. Therefore, the total annual cost of studying and living in the U.S. is approximately $25,000.
In the U.S., students are allowed to work only on campus. Working off-campus is legally prohibited for international students.
When Should You Apply?
If you plan to start at a four-year university in the U.S., you should begin the application process a year in advance, during the first semester of your final year of high school, and take the necessary exams. Applications for community colleges are simpler and processed more quickly. If your English proficiency is insufficient and you cannot pass the required exams, you can participate in preparatory programs organized by INEQ to address these gaps and take advantage of direct university placement services. You can learn the start dates of the preparatory programs from your INEQ advisor.
Inter-University Transfer
You’re a University Student, but Want to Continue Your Education Abroad?
Unsure about what to do in such a situation?
You’re in your 3rd year, but where will you start abroad? Will your credits transfer? Is your language level sufficient? Will you need to take an additional language exam? These are just a few of the many unanswered questions on your mind. Don’t worry! We answer all of these questions, making it easier for you to decide. Here’s everything you need to know about transferring between universities…
Students studying at private or public universities in Turkey or Cyprus can transfer to a foreign university in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year. There are two critical factors in transferring, especially to UK universities: the student’s English proficiency and GPA. If a student has an IELTS score of at least 6 or higher and a GPA of 2.3 or higher out of 4, they will be accepted by universities.
If the student’s English is not sufficient, they can attend “pre-sessional” programs offered during the summer.
One of the most important rules when transferring is that the student’s transcript and the courses taken must meet the entry requirements and align with the curriculum of the university program. Transfer is only possible for the same or closely related programs.
Universities where we can facilitate transfers abroad:
- Leeds Metropolitan University
- Anglia Ruskin University
- Glamorgan University
- Bournemouth University
- La Trobe University Sydney
- Hartford University, USA
- New Haven University, USA
- Barry University, Miami
- Adelphi University, New York
Since the universities listed above generally offer three-year undergraduate programs, a student transferring from the 1st year would need to restart from the 1st year. A student transferring from the 2nd year may be able to start in the 3rd year if very successful, or may start again in the 2nd year. A 3rd-year student could continue in either the 2nd or 3rd year.
For transfers to American and Canadian universities, the student’s completed courses in Turkey need to be evaluated by an independent agency for “credit evaluation.” This process compares the Turkish courses with the American or Canadian systems, determining which year the student will start based on this evaluation.
Other universities we can facilitate transfers to abroad:
For the USA: San Diego State University, Hartford University, New Haven University, Adelphi University, Barry University, Murray State University, University of Tennessee at Martin, University of Incarnate Word, and Auburn University.
For Canada: University of New Brunswick, Malaspina University College, University of Manitoba, Trent University, Simon Fraser University, University College of Fraser Valley, Trinity Western University, Thompson Rivers University, and St. Mary’s University.
Documents Required for Admission and Application:
- University transcript and course descriptions (translated into English and Turkish)
- Student ID from your current university in Turkey (in both Turkish and English)
- High school transcript and diploma (translation needed if in Turkish – not required by all universities)
- Two reference letters (sealed, written in English by university professors)
- English proficiency test results (TOEFL 213+ or IELTS 6.0+)
- Personal Statement (written in English, detailing your personal background and academic goals)
- SAT or ACT results (sometimes required by US universities)
- Bank reference letter for US and Canada studies
- Portfolio for universities that accept students based on talent
- References, awards, and certificates related to cultural, scientific, social, or athletic achievements.
Diploma Programs
Certificate/Diploma Programs in the U.S.
Certificate programs are often preferred due to their more flexible admission requirements compared to master’s programs, their practical and easily applicable knowledge in the workplace, and their affordability. Many students opt for certificate/diploma programs instead of master’s programs. Another group of students choosing certificate/diploma programs consists of those who, rather than pursuing a bachelor’s degree, want to acquire a specific skill or profession through 3 months to 2 years of study.
Comparison Between Diploma/Master Programs
More flexible admission requirements for certificate/diploma programs: While many programs require English proficiency, some accept intermediate or upper-intermediate levels. Students whose English proficiency is insufficient to begin the program can attend English courses offered by almost all schools. In contrast, master’s programs typically require a strong academic background, reference letters, valid scores from exams like GRE or MAT, and for programs like the MBA, usually two or more years of work experience.
More practical and applicable knowledge: Certificate/diploma programs focus on practical and immediately applicable knowledge in the workplace, while master’s programs are more academically oriented and involve theoretical knowledge, often aimed at academic careers.
Certificate/diploma programs are more affordable: Master’s programs generally take two years to complete and can cost around $40,000, varying by country and school.
Certificate/diploma programs are shorter: These programs typically last 3, 6, or 9 months, with some lasting one to two years. Although there are examples of one-year master’s programs, most take two years to complete.
More flexible start dates: While this can vary by program and school, certificate/diploma programs generally offer more start date options than master’s programs. Many certificate/diploma programs accept applications every three months, with some even accepting students on a weekly basis.
Credits can be accepted: Students who complete certain certificate/diploma programs and later decide to pursue a university education may have their courses counted for credit toward their degree.
Additionally, many certificate/diploma programs offer internship opportunities to help students gain practical experience in real work environments related to their field of study.
Exam Preparation Courses
SAT, GRE, and GMAT
To be accepted into American universities, the main requirements are financial adequacy, English proficiency, and academic success. Equally important is succeeding in aptitude and knowledge tests designed for undergraduate and graduate programs. The most important of these tests are the SAT, GRE, and GMAT.
The common feature of the SAT, GRE, and GMAT exams is that they are also required from American students, meaning the English used in these exams is at a high level. There are preparation programs available in the U.S. for these exams, helping students reach the necessary language and knowledge levels for the tests.
What is the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test)?
The SAT is a standardized test required for admission to universities in the U.S. It consists of two parts: the SAT 1, which includes general aptitude and knowledge tests, and the SAT 2, which focuses on subject-specific tests (such as physics, chemistry, literature, etc.). While not all U.S. schools require the SAT 1, most do, and some also require students to take specific subject tests from SAT 2. SAT 1 can be compared to the ÖSS in Turkey’s former university entrance system, while SAT 2 is similar to the ÖYS. It is important to note that SAT tests are also required from American students, and the level of English is set according to their standards.
SAT 1 lasts for 3 hours, with most questions being multiple-choice. However, students are also asked to write an essay on a specific topic within 25 minutes. SAT 2 lasts for 1 hour and tests knowledge in a specific field. Scores on the SAT range from 200 to 800, and the required score depends on the schools and programs.
What is the GRE (Graduate Record Examination)?
The GRE is one of the exams required in the U.S. It is typically taken by students who wish to pursue a university degree. The GRE consists of two sections: a general aptitude test covering verbal, quantitative, and analytical reasoning, and a subject test covering fields such as physics, biology, engineering, and political science. While some universities only require the general aptitude test, others may require subject tests. Since the GRE is also required from American students, the English level is much more advanced than that of the TOEFL. The GRE is administered as a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) in Turkey and around the world.
What is the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)?
The GMAT is an exam required for students who want to pursue an MBA abroad. While some universities and colleges may not require the GMAT, since the best candidates are accepted into the programs, taking the GMAT is highly recommended. In recent years, some Turkish universities (such as Boğaziçi University and METU) have also started requiring GMAT scores from students. GMAT scores range from 200 to 800. However, achieving a high score on the GMAT is very important. Even with an excellent academic transcript, students scoring below 500 on the GMAT have a low chance of being admitted to graduate programs. To get into a good school, a score of 600 or above should be targeted.
University Preparation Year
What is a Foundation Program? / Why is It Necessary?
Due to the differences between the high school education systems in the UK and Turkey, the university admission requirements for students who have completed high school in Turkey are different in the UK. Since students graduating from high school in Turkey are not considered equivalent to A-Level in the UK, they cannot directly start university there. Students who want to study at a university in the UK after graduating from high school in Turkey must not only have a good command of English but also take a one-year FOUNDATION (preparatory) course to reach the A-Level standard. FOUNDATION education, which is offered by many universities and private institutions, provides students with supportive courses in subjects like Science, Mathematics, and Social Sciences over the course of one year. Students are prepared for their desired field of study, and those who successfully complete the foundation program are admitted to universities.
To participate in a foundation program, students must have a sufficient level of English, as foundation programs do not include English language courses. Students who do not meet this requirement must first take language courses before starting the foundation program. The time required for students to reach the necessary level depends on their initial proficiency. For some students, a few months of language training may suffice, while those with a weaker grasp of English may need up to a year of intensive instruction. INEQ advisors evaluate students’ levels during the application process and determine the appropriate educational strategy. Students who do not have sufficient English skills cannot enroll in a foundation program and must first complete an English preparatory course.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE AND CONTENT
Foundation programs typically consist of two main components:
Academic Skills: In this section, students develop essential skills needed for academic study in the UK. The curriculum includes subjects such as computer skills, research techniques, writing skills, analysis, and exam techniques.
Specialist Subjects: In the second phase, students receive education tailored to the field they wish to study, acquiring the necessary foundational knowledge, skills, and competencies for their chosen degree. These courses are often introductory-level subjects in the student’s intended major, giving them an advantage during their first year at university.
Admission Requirements for Foundation Programs
To be accepted into a one-year foundation program, the primary requirement is English proficiency. Students who do not meet the IELTS 5.5 (upper-intermediate) level are directed to language programs to reach this standard. Another requirement is the student’s high school GPA, which typically must be 3.0 or higher, though this may vary by institution. Foundation programs generally begin in September or May. We recommend applying at least three months in advance to allow enough time for the application and visa process.
University Transition After Completing the Foundation Program
In the UK, foundation courses can be taken at many universities or through private institutions that collaborate with universities. These programs often allow students to experience the country and visit multiple universities, helping them make more informed decisions when transitioning to higher education. Foundation programs that offer flexibility in choosing a university after completion are particularly advantageous.

Community College (Canada)
Community Colleges in Canada
There are 175 institutions in Canada, members of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, referred to by different names such as Community College, Technical Institute, University College, and Cégep (pre-university degree). These institutions share a common function of serving the needs of businesses, industries, and the private service sector. Community colleges, which are highly popular across Canada, offer education programs ranging from 2-3 years or even shorter. Paid Internship Programs
Paid Internship Program in the U.S.
Paid internship programs in the U.S. for university graduates are among the most popular educational opportunities. These programs offer participants the chance to improve their General and Business English while gaining international work experience during their internship period. Here are some of the key advantages:
- Gaining international work experience
- Continuing to develop your English skills in a work environment
- Developing a sense of work discipline
- Experiencing different work cultures
- Expanding your network by meeting new people
- Living in the U.S. for 12 to 18 months with your earned salary
Program Requirements: Participants need to have at least an upper-intermediate level of English. If your English level is not sufficient, you will need to attend an academic preparation program in Turkey to bring your English skills to the required level. Once you reach the required level, the job search process begins. Internships can be located in any state or city in the U.S., and specific location preferences are generally not possible. Placement is based on employer acceptance.
Paid and Unpaid Internship Fields:
- Unpaid internships in areas related to economics and administrative sciences (e.g., accounting, sales, marketing, and other office jobs) – Internship duration up to 18 months.
- Unpaid internships in the field of computer science and Information Technology – Internship duration up to 18 months.
- Paid internships in tourism, hospitality, or other service sectors – Internship duration up to 12 months.
Internships are assigned based on the candidate’s field of study and/or relevant work experience. The companies range from small to medium-sized businesses, national firms, and international corporations. However, international companies expect higher qualifications from candidates.
The internships are paid, offering participants the opportunity to gain both work experience and the chance to live in the U.S. while earning a salary. Salaries range from $1,200 to $1,900 per month (depending on the employer).
Program Structure:
The program consists of two stages:
Stage 1: Application
When applying for the internship program, educationAL advisors will help you prepare a resume suitable for the program. You will fill out the application form and pay the application deposit. Your application will then be sent to available internship positions in the U.S.
Once a company shows interest in your resume, they will request an interview via Skype or phone. INEQ advisors will help you prepare for the interview. If the interview is successful, you move on to Stage 2. This stage can take between 1 week and 4 months.
Stage 2: DS-2019 Form Request
Once you pass the interview, you gain the right to work in the U.S. for up to 12 months with pay. At this stage, the necessary documents for the DS-2019 form and visa application are prepared. You pay the program fee, the documents are finalized, and they are sent to the U.S. Within 4 to 6 weeks, you will receive your DS-2019 form, which is required for your J1 visa application.
