GCSE
General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE)
What is the GCSE?
The GCSE is the main exam taken by UK students to complete the first step of their secondary or high school education. Once you have completed the GCSE program, you will be eligible to progress to A Levels, Foundation, or equivalent courses.
What subjects can I study?
There is a wide range of exciting GCSE subjects to choose from. Some subjects are compulsory, while others are optional. For example, at Bellerbys College, you will study 3 core subjects and select 3 more from additional options.
Core subjects: Mathematics, English, and Computer Science.
Optional subjects: Accounting, Art, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Economics, Geography, General Economics, and Physics.
What does the GCSE consist of?
The specifics depend on the subject you choose, but classes may be held in a classroom or laboratory. At times, you may go on educational trips.
You will be expected to complete individual homework assignments or group projects. Regular testing to ensure you are making progress is a key feature of the GCSE program.
How will I be assessed?
For each GCSE subject you take, you will receive a final grade ranging from A (highest) to G. Your GCSE result will be the outcome of one or more assessment methods:
- Exams that are externally marked and graded.
- Continuous assessment during the course, such as coursework evaluations and practical experiments.
What do my GCSE grades mean?
They measure your success at the secondary school level in the UK and assess your readiness to advance to A Levels or equivalent standards. Some universities specify minimum grades in certain subjects as part of their entry requirements. Later, some employers will look at your specific achievements in certain subjects on your application.
What else will I gain from studying for the GCSE?
Studying a wide range of subjects will help you understand what you truly want to pursue. If you choose to progress to A Levels, the GCSE provides you with an ideal foundation:
- Analytical skills
- Research and analysis abilities
- Study techniques
- Teamwork skills
Earn your GCSE in just one year
If you:
- Are 14 years old or older
- Have not completed your secondary education in your home country
- Plan to take A Levels or a Foundation course in the UK, this program is perfect for you.
The UK’s core secondary school qualification
The GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a nationally recognized exam that marks the completion of your secondary education. Bellerbys students receive the internationally recognized IGCSE, accepted worldwide.
In addition to core subjects like English (5-10 hours per week) and Mathematics, you will take four additional subjects based on your interests and the academic or career fields you wish to pursue.

Diploma Programs
Certificate and Diploma Programs in the UK
What kind of diplomas will I need?
The diplomas you need will depend on the area of study you wish to pursue. Qualifications like A-levels and BTEC International Diplomas are below university level and prepare you for higher education. On the other hand, HNDs (Higher National Diplomas) and foundation degree programs are at university level and can allow you to enter the second or third year of a university program.
For an initial idea, see the list below:
BTEC National Diploma: Equivalent to a good level of general high school education. Requires four GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) with grades A-C, plus an IELTS score of 4.5-5.0.
AS/A-Levels: Equivalent to a good level of general high school education. Requires five GCSEs with grades A-C, plus an IELTS score of 4.5-5.0.
International Foundation Year: Equivalent to 12 years of education or its equivalent in your home country, plus an IELTS score of 4.5-5.0.
HND (Higher National Diploma): Equivalent qualifications: One or two A-levels, or a BTEC National Diploma, or an International Foundation Year, plus an IELTS score of 5.5-6.0.
Foundation Degree (pre-university): Equivalent qualifications: One or two A-levels, or a BTEC National Diploma, or an International Foundation Year, plus an IELTS score of 5.5-6.0.
What types of programs are available?
Programs can last up to two years (or three years if a year is spent working in between). You can choose from thousands of options in fields like science and technology, computer science and business, art and design, social sciences, humanities, and more. The UK’s education system is broad and flexible, allowing you to choose the program and qualifications that suit you best.
University Transfers
Students studying at a university in Turkey, whether in an associate or undergraduate degree program, can transfer the credits they have earned in Turkey to a university abroad and obtain a diploma from the institution they transfer to.
For a student to transfer to a university abroad, the average of the courses taken during their education in Turkey is important. Each university and program has different transfer requirements. In addition to meeting the GPA requirement, students must take the TOEFL or IELTS exam and achieve the required score.
The acceptance of credits earned in Turkey at the university abroad depends on the content of the courses and the grades achieved. A student may transfer to another university without losing any credits, or they may be required to retake some courses.
Each school has different admission periods for transfer students. Applications must be completed by the deadline for the designated period. Students who study abroad have the right to work in that country for one year following graduation, providing a valuable opportunity to gain work experience in line with their education.
Pre-Master Programs
What is a Pre-Master / Pre-MBA Program? Why is it Necessary?
One of the most important criteria for acceptance into a master’s program in the UK is the student’s GPA. Students who do not have the required level of English proficiency or whose GPA is below the required threshold can participate in a pre-master program lasting 1 or 2 terms to gain the necessary qualifications. Successfully completing these programs guarantees entry into a master’s program. The duration of Pre-Master and Pre-MBA programs varies depending on your level and needs, usually lasting between 10 and 30 weeks. To be accepted into these programs, you must have at least an intermediate level of English. If your English is below this level, you should first attend an English course before moving on to the Pre-Master program.
Program Structure and Content
Foundation programs are typically divided into two main sections:
Academic Skills: In this section, students acquire the essential skills needed for academic learning in the UK. Courses include computer skills, research techniques, writing techniques, analysis, and exam techniques, all of which are vital for success. Without this training, students often struggle with their studies in the UK. Additionally, preparation for exams like GMAT, GRE, or IELTS is provided according to the student’s needs.
Specialist Subjects: The second phase of the program focuses on providing students with the fundamental knowledge, skills, and competencies required for the specific field they wish to pursue in their master’s studies. Often, these courses cover introductory topics and terminology, which help students succeed and complete their master’s studies on time.
Admission Requirements for Pre-Master / Pre-MBA Programs
The primary requirement for admission to these programs is English proficiency. Students who do not meet the IELTS 5.5 (upper-intermediate) level are directed to language programs to reach the required level. Once the student reaches the necessary English level, they can continue with the Pre-Master program. The basic requirement for entry into a master’s program is holding an undergraduate degree. If you want to pursue an MBA, many universities require 2-3 years of work experience, though some institutions offer MBA programs without this requirement. ELT academic advisors will guide you through the application process, ensuring that your qualifications and preferences are matched with the most suitable program.

Master's in the UK
Pursuing a master’s degree in the UK means obtaining a prestigious diploma that is recognized not only in your home country but also globally, wherever you go. This is why thousands of students choose to go to the UK for their master’s education every year.
A master’s program in the UK typically lasts one year, during which students undergo intensive education. Most programs start in September, but some programs, especially those in high-demand fields like Business Administration, also offer January intakes. Application deadlines vary depending on the university and program, but applying early is generally advantageous for those aiming to pursue a master’s in the UK.
Students must demonstrate their English proficiency, usually through the IELTS exam (though some programs may also accept TOEFL). For master’s programs in the UK, an IELTS score between 6.5 and 7.5 is typically required, depending on the program. Students who have not yet taken the English proficiency exam can still apply, and universities may issue a “Conditional Offer” in such cases.
Apart from English proficiency, GPA is also a crucial factor in the application process. Students with higher GPAs have a better chance of being accepted into more competitive universities. Extracurricular activities, involvement in school clubs, certifications, and achievements in sports are also important aspects considered in master’s applications, as they reflect the student’s character and contributions outside of academics.
Some programs may have additional requirements. For example, MBA programs usually require at least two years of work experience, and arts-related programs may require a portfolio.
Master’s program fees vary depending on the university and program, ranging from £7,500 to £14,000, though some universities charge higher fees.
For students with a lower GPA or those looking to apply for a master’s in a field different from their undergraduate degree, Pre-Masters programs are an alternative. These programs last 3, 6, or 9 months and can be taken at a university or college. Pre-Masters programs include foundational courses and IELTS preparation. The fees for these programs depend on the length of study and the institution.

Pursuing a PhD in the UK is generally chosen by students who plan to pursue an academic career. The duration of a PhD program is three years.
A PhD is suitable for students who are interested in a particular field and wish to conduct research in that area. Students work on their research under the guidance of advisors who provide mentorship in their chosen field. Almost all UK universities offer PhD programs.
When applying to PhD programs, the student’s previous academic performance, the field they wish to research, and their English proficiency are considered. Candidates must prove their English proficiency through IELTS, and the required score varies depending on the program. Typically, a score between 7.0 and 7.5 is needed for admission.
The fees for PhD programs vary depending on the program and the university, and there are scholarship opportunities available both within the universities and through external organizations.
Certificate Programs in the UK
Every year, thousands of students from around the world come to the UK to participate in certificate programs.
Students who have at least a high school diploma can enroll in certificate programs. These programs are particularly popular among students who have completed university education. Certificate programs have easier admission requirements compared to master’s programs and usually last from three months to one academic year. As a result, they are often chosen by students who do not have the time to pursue a master’s degree. Programs typically begin in September, January, or April. There are also short-term certificate programs offered exclusively during the summer.
Students enrolling in certificate programs must prove their English proficiency with IELTS (some schools also accept TOEFL). Depending on the program, students are generally required to have an IELTS score between 5.5 and 6.5. Most schools do not require an additional IELTS score from students who have graduated from programs where the language of instruction was English.
There are certificate programs available in a variety of fields, from Marketing and Public Relations to Fashion and Creative Writing. Fees vary depending on the duration of the program and the institution. Certificate program fees are generally more affordable compared to master’s programs offered by universities.

London has five international airports and is known for its rainy weather throughout the year, with cool summers and mild winters.

The executive center features 12 computers with free Wi-Fi access, and lessons are conducted in classrooms equipped with Skype and Apple iPad applications. The “Berlitz Method” is the core of the educational approach, with a focus on spoken communication. Intensive courses are offered for those seeking a rapid learning process in a short period. These courses are particularly aimed at professionals in the business world.
Lessons are conducted individually or in small groups, and instead of a single teacher, a team of teachers delivers the lessons. The goal of this team-based approach is to familiarize students with different teaching styles and accents. Programs are flexible and tailored to the needs and learning styles of the students, with the target language, English, being used actively in all activities. This is the core of the Berlitz Method.
Berlitz London offers an online learning program called CyberTeachers, which is accessible 24/7. Students can continue their education online after returning to their home countries.
In addition to Business English and General English programs, Berlitz London also offers Exam Preparation Programs (IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, and GMAT). Some of the programs include:

The program also includes 3 months of access to the online learning platform CyberTeachers.
-
