High school education in Switzerland varies by canton. While high school is not compulsory, most students choose to continue their education. As Switzerland consists of 26 cantons, the education system is managed by each individual canton. Every canton sets its own curriculum, school calendar, and admission criteria. The regulatory body overseeing this system is called SERI (State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation), which regularly monitors the education systems across the cantons.
One of the biggest advantages of high school education in Switzerland is the wide range of options it offers. Swiss high schools provide various programs and diploma choices, such as the IB (International Baccalaureate), IGCSE, Abitur, Swiss Matura, and the French Baccalaureate. When studying in a Swiss high school, students are guaranteed to learn at least one additional foreign language. With Switzerland’s four official languages, students graduate with proficiency in at least two foreign languages. They can study French, English, German, or Italian.
High schools in Switzerland can be classified into three groups:
VET Schools (Vocational Education and Training) – These schools focus on vocational education and are the most popular choice among students. They prepare students for professional careers through practical vocational training. The duration of this training is between 2 and 4 years, and students who complete the program receive a federal VET diploma or certificate.
Upper Secondary Schools – These schools cater to students who want to pursue careers in fields such as health, social services, and education. The students receive both vocational training and basic high school education. This program lasts three years, and students must pass a final exam to earn the upper secondary specialized school certificate.
Baccalaureate Schools – These schools are often the preferred choice for students. The curriculum at baccalaureate schools is set by each canton, and the education can last anywhere from 3 to 6 years. At the end of their studies, students take a baccalaureate exam and write a baccalaureate essay. Upon successful completion, students are awarded the Matura certificate, which enables them to pursue further studies at cantonal universities, technology institutes, and teacher training universities.
The main admission requirements for Swiss high schools include a strong grade point average and proof of language proficiency. Additionally, different cantons may ask for letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, or require students to take exams and attend interviews.

There are 12 public universities in Switzerland, two of which are research universities called the “Federal Institute of Technology.” Additionally, there are vocational colleges, art and music institutes, teacher training universities, universities of applied sciences, and universities of applied arts.
Each university in Switzerland has its own application process and specific requirements. Therefore, there is no centralized system for international students to apply to universities collectively. For this reason, applications to Swiss universities must be handled with care and precision.
Switzerland is a federal state composed of 26 cantons, each with its own unique education system. The cantons set their own systems and regulations for education.
The language of instruction also varies from canton to canton. Switzerland has four official languages, and the language of instruction at universities is usually German, English, or French. One of the primary application requirements is language proficiency. Students who wish to study in English must submit IELTS or TOEFL scores, those who want to study in German must provide TestDaf results, and students aiming to study in French need to submit DELF/DALF exams to prove their language proficiency.
Another requirement for applying to Swiss universities is to have completed 12 years of secondary education and possess a high school diploma that is recognized by Swiss universities. Students are also required to submit their academic transcripts, a CV, and a motivation letter.
The standard duration of undergraduate studies at Swiss universities is 3 years. However, for fields such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and certain engineering programs, the study period extends to 5 or 6 years.

The annual fees for undergraduate programs at public universities range from CHF 400 to CHF 8,000. These fees vary depending on the canton and whether or not you are a citizen of the European Union. However, Switzerland is considered one of the most expensive countries in Europe in terms of living costs. The average monthly cost for a student, including accommodation, is estimated to be between CHF 2,000-3,000.
International students enrolled in Swiss universities are allowed to work part-time for up to 15 hours per week. On weekends or during holidays, students are permitted to work full-time. It’s important to note that to obtain a work permit, you must have resided in Switzerland for at least 6 months.
After graduating from a Swiss university, students are granted 6 months to search for a job. If a job is secured, students can work with their employer to apply for a residence permit and extend their work authorization.
